  • What is PP Film

PP film, or polypropylene film, is a thin film primarily composed of polypropylene (PP) as its main raw material.

Polypropylene is a semi-crystalline thermoplastic with the following characteristics:

    • High density and a high crystalline linear polymer without side chains, making it one of the materials with extremely low density among all resins.
    • Excellent insulation properties, suitable for applications in the electrical insulation field.
    • Good chemical stability, except for susceptibility to concentrated sulfuric acid and concentrated nitric acid, remaining relatively stable to most other chemical reagents.

However, low molecular weight alkanes, aromatic hydrocarbons, and chlorinated hydrocarbons can soften or swell polypropylene.

    • High-temperature resistance, capable of withstanding the impact of both high and low temperatures.
    • Excellent mechanical properties.
PP film, with its outstanding characteristics, finds applications in various aspects of daily life. These include:

    • Heat-sealing film for printing and laminate packaging, widely used in the production of bags.
    • Ultra-thin, highly light-diffusing film for paper-plastic composites used in books, brochures, gift bags, and similar applications.
    • Release film back-coated with silicone oil, employed for protecting adhesive products such as plasters, labels, silent adhesive tapes, and other back-coated items.
    • Wrapping and molding protective film for industrial products like fishing rods, golf clubs, and more.
    • Heat-sealable aluminum-coated film directly applied in the packaging of food items.
    • Highly transparent film utilized in the production of transparent adhesive tapes and the composite of paper-based products.

The versatility of PP film makes it a crucial material in a wide range of industries, contributing to the enhancement of product performance and packaging solutions.

    PP vs CPP vs OPP

PP (Polypropylene), CPP (Cast Polypropylene), and OPP (Oriented Polypropylene) are all types of polypropylene films with distinct characteristics and applications.
    Characteristics
    Applications
    PP
  • Versatile thermoplastic polymer
  • High clarity
  • Excellent tensile strength
  • Chemical resistance
  • It is commonly used for packaging, labels, and various applications in both industrial and consumer products.
Commonly used for packaging (such as for snacks, textiles, stationery, and various consumer goods), labels, and various applications in both industrial and consumer products.
    CPP
  • Produced using a cast film extrusion process
  • Excellent clarity
  • Seal strength
  • Flexibility
  • Higher impact strength compared to other polypropylene films
  • Used for flexible packaging applications, such as food packaging, overwraps, and adhesive tapes.
Its enhanced flexibility makes it suitable for applications requiring a formable and durable film.
    OPP
  • Produced by stretching polypropylene in both the machine and transverse directions
  • improved strength
  • stiffness
  • clarity
  • High gloss surface and is resistant to moisture
  • Widely used in packaging for various products, including snacks, confectionery, and other consumer goods.
Its excellent printability makes it suitable for labels and flexible packaging.

    CPP Film Applications

CPP film is produced through the extrusion process of polypropylene (PP) and differs from BOPP (biaxially oriented polypropylene) film.

It belongs to the category of non-oriented films and possesses excellent transparency, high glossiness, good rigidity, effective moisture barrier, outstanding heat resistance, and ease of heat sealing.

Following printing, lamination, and bag making, CPP film finds widespread applications in packaging for food, pharmaceuticals, paper products, clothing, daily necessities, and industrial goods.

    Materials Structure
    Applications
    Highly transparent/low-temperature heat-sealing film
  • Excellent transparency
  • Low heat-sealing temperature
  • Fast bag-making speed
  • BOPP (Printing)/CPP
    Jelly and Pudding Packaging Bags
    Metalized Material/Film
  • One side can be coated with aluminum
  • while the other side exhibits excellent heat-sealing properties
  • Saves one layer of base material and an additional lamination process when used in aluminum-plastic lamination packaging
  • Lowers costs
  • BOPP (Printing)/MCPP
Packaging for expanded food items, cereal bags, etc.
    Retort Film
  • Maintains its shape under high temperature and pressure
  • Exhibiting elasticity
  • PET/NY/AL/RCPP
Packaging for sauce, and meat products requiring high-temperature sterilization applications.
    Refrigeratable CPP (Retortable Film)
  • A new type of flexible CPP has been developed that can be used under -18°C refrigeration conditions. (Typically, CPP tends to become brittle at low temperatures, making it unsuitable for frozen packaging)
  • BOPP/CPP
Packaging for items such as dumplings, and other products that require refrigeration while also demanding transparent visibility.
CPP film is characterized by its exceptional transparency, high glossiness, good rigidity, effective moisture barrier, excellent heat resistance, and easy heat sealing.

Depending on its intended use, it can be classified into general-purpose CPP film, metalized CPP film, and retort-grade CPP film.

    • After undergoing printing and bag making, CPP film is extensively used in the packaging of clothing, knitwear, floral arrangements, documents, and photo albums, as well as in food packaging for both barrier properties and decorative metallic films.
    • Moreover, there is a growing demand in various sectors such as food outer packaging, candy packaging (twist films), pharmaceutical packaging (IV bags), adhesive tapes, business card holders, ring binders, and other applications.
    • CPP film exhibits excellent heat resistance due to the high softening point of PP, which is approximately 140°C. This makes it suitable for applications in hot-fill packaging, retort pouches, and aseptic packaging.
    • Its resistance to acids, alkalis, and oils further enhances its suitability, making it a preferred material for packaging bread products and laminating materials.
The film is safe for food contact, demonstrating excellent performance without affecting the flavor of the packaged food.
Additionally, different resin grades can be selected to achieve desired properties.
